HOW TO: View the Security tab in Exchange Admin tool

Posted by Bharat Suneja at 3:59 PM
Every time I get asked this, I remember the name of the key - ShowSecurityPage - but forget the complete path. It's easier to simply keep the registry hack in a .REG file, so here it is. Right-click on the link, save, remove the .txt from the filename.
ShowSecurityPage.reg

If you'd rather do it manually, the path is HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Exadmin
ShowSecurityPage
- Reg_DWORD - value: 1

In response to comments to this post, note the following:
- This is a user-specific setting - note the reg value is being created in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive. If another user logs on and needs to access the Security tab, the reg value will need to be added in that user's profile as well.
- The user needs to have (at least) Exchange View Only Admin privileges. Else, you can't see much in the Exchange System Manager console, and when trying to access the Security tab, you'll see the following error:

Besides the registry edit of adding “ShowSecurityPage”, are there any other restrictions or permissions for viewing the Security tab for Exchange in Active Directory? Can it be added to another machine that has the Exchange plug-ins? Can you limit who has access to this page by user?

Thank you.

- The user would need to have (at least) Exchange View Only Admin privileges to see the permissions. Else, user will see the following error:
Unable to read security information from the directory.

Exchange System Manager

- Yes, the reg value can be added to any computer that has Exchange Management Tools installed.
- Note, this is a user-specific setting in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive. If another user logs on to that computer, the reg value will need to be added in that user's profile (for the user to be able to see the Security tab).
