Exchange Server 2007 SP1: A bag of goodies!

by Bharat Suneja

It’s public now – a bag of goodies awaits Exchange folks come Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

Terry Myerson, Exchange Server product group GM, just posted on the team blog about some exciting new stuff we’ll get to see in SP1.

If you’re in love with the idea of Local Continuous Replication (LCR) for stand-alone/non-clustered servers, and Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) for Exchange clusters, you’ll love SP1 for its Standby Continuous Replication. This allows you to replicate an Exchange server over a WAN link to a remote data center, to be activated in case of a site-level disaster or similar outage.

Outlook Web Access will get its S/MIME support (for signing and/or encrypting messages using certificates), Rules, and Deleted Item Recovery back (many folks missed these in RTM – Bharat), in addition to the much talked about monthly Calendar view, and personal distribution lists. :)

The GUI console will get Public Folder management capabilities, POP & IMAP config, amongst other things.

Another welcome addition – move-mailbox will get PST support. I’m not a big fan of PSTs (personal stores – files with mailbox data that typically reside on users’ desktops, or other unthinkable locations like shared folders.. ), but they do come in handy in a lot of situations.

Finally (this is not a comprehensive list), SP1 will suppor Longhorn server, the next version of Windows server.

Betas should be available on TechNet Plus some time in April, with RTM scheduled for “second half of the year”. Refer to Terry’s post titled “Talking Exchange 2007 SP1…” on the team blog for more details.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the beta code when it drops! As a sidenote (couldn’t resist adding this), this should keep Exchange folks excited during these last few days till DST 2007 kicks in on March 11. :)
