Awesome Powershell presentation by Vivek Sharma and Mihai Jalobeanu

by Bharat Suneja

Just got out of a breakout session titled “Microsoft Exchange Server 2007: Management Shell and Scripting” by Vivek Sharma & Mihai Jalobeanu. Vivek & Mihai provided a great technical deep dive into Powershell (aka “Monad”) and how to use Exchange Management Shell (a layer on top of PowerShell) to manage Exchange Server 2007.

The session was full of demos, and if you weren’t following PowerShell and Exchange Server 2007 for a while some of those would’ve made your jaws drop!

At the same time, it’s important to note that this command-line management functionality does not come at the cost of GUI tools. A good part of what can be done from the shell can also be accomplished from the GUI – but for a lot of repetitive tasks the shell is simply way more efficient. Some advanced tasks will only be possible through the shell (just as some more advanced functionality is only available through registry hacks).

If you’re interested in Exchange, it’d help to get a leg up on PowerShell and Exchange Management Shell (again, EMS is a layer on top of PowerShell – not a different beast… ) as soon as you can.
